My photo
Being a modeller for quite a few years now, I decided to explore the endless possibilities that the world (through internet) offers, and come up with a series of ways of building, modelling and painting fast (but not hastily), to create the worlds I was seeing in history books since I was little. . .If you care to join me. . . This is the place to be! And, I promise you to find the way (or ways)!!

Figure on Cheap Lighting

Hello everyone!!

It's been a rather busy weekend for me in terms of painting and modelling. I have managed to paint the whole lot of the German Artillery men from Fantassin Miniatures. But, before I share my photos with you, I have to share a link I found regarding the ways of taking good photos for miniatures.

This link is called ''Figure on Cheap Lighting'' and it comes from Happy Soda.
It contains an excellent tutorial of how to take nice photos of your models with some materials that us fellow modelers can all obtain at a cheap price.

Enjoy:

Have a good Monday night everyone!

P.S: Now I have to find my self some tracing paper..... ;-)

  1. Some good ideas there.
Another good trick, apart from the "infinate background" (the curved sheet of paper the mini sits on in the link, is tipping the top of the background at an angle towards the figure. This concentrates any reflected light and creates shading. Another...take a pringles top, cut a hole for the lens so that some of the pringle top covers the flash. This makes a diffuser.
And another..an infinate background but curved the other way around, a bit like a stage set around the sides of the mini, with any weak natural light (even on a cloudy day) from behind and above. this concentrates the light towards the mini.
last....in even the weakest light, set the camera on the lowest light setting, no flash and macro on. When you press to take the pic you can just see black through the viewfinder but the pic comes out really cear..my Gibbet pics were done this way.

  3. Thank you for the link Thanos! With the absence of sunlight right now, I'm having a hard time getting decent shots of my figures. The last pics I took were done outside and when I finished my fingers were so numb I almost dropped the camera.

  4. Cheers Thanos, photography is not a strong suit of mine so any 'simple' techniques are GOOD!
